Shouldn’t I just block all AI bots?
Usually not. Answer bots such as those of ChatGPT or Perplexity cite you with a link and bring visitors. If you block everything, you disappear from those answers. A distinction makes sense: wanted bots in, pure training or scraper bots out after weighing it up.
What is the difference between answer bots and training bots?
Answer bots fetch a page the moment someone asks a question and usually link to it. Training bots collect content to train future models without a direct benefit for you. Many providers use separate bots for each, so they can be handled separately.
Do I need Cloudflare for this?
Not for robots.txt. For reliable enforcement, analytics and Pay per Crawl, yes, because robots.txt is only a request that not every bot follows. Your website can stay where it is hosted; only the management of the domain moves to Cloudflare.
Can you make money with AI crawlers?
With “Pay per Crawl”, Cloudflare offers to let AI crawlers pay per request. It is new and mainly worthwhile for large amounts of valuable content, such as specialist portals or publishers. For most company websites, visibility in AI answers is worth more than the fee. We tell you honestly what makes sense in your case.
